Abstract: There is highlighted the present preoccupation of society for obtaining non-fossils bio-fuels, starting with the biomass (of vegetal, animal nature, including biodegradable organic wastes). This intercession facilitates on the one hand, the pressure exercised upon the fossil fuel sources, and, on the other hand, the green house effect emission (resulting from the use of fossil fuels) is considerably reduced leading to a cleaner environment in the context of general economic development.

Abstract: Consequently of the greenhouse effect, together the troposphere warming, the atmosphere upper layers cool down.  This process like in the South Pole will generate ozone layer attenuation in the North Pole, too. Because of the cooling, the atmosphere thickness shrinks, which will attenuate its drag. This could have theoretical and practical consequences and this shows the phenomenon forecast importance.

Abstract: Collembola are among the most spread and abundant terrestrial arthropods. Their importance for the terrestrial ecosystems has been underestimated for a long time. With the exception of a few parasite species, collembola are considered to be useful organisms, having an important role for the decomposition process. Collembola have a major role within the trophic chains, because they represent the food of numerous predators, so that these make up a way to transfer of the pollutants as well, even causing, through bioaccumulation in organisms, the contamination of a whole ecosystem.

Abstract: Excessive growth of filamentous microorganisms in activated sludge (bulking sludge) is a major operational problem which causes poor settlement of activated sludge. Gram and Neisser staining techniques were used for identification of the filamentous bacteria and for the subjectiv scoring of filaments abundance in the activated sludge from Bistrita wastewater treatment plant. The presence and abundance of filamentous bacteria were investigated in comparison with the phisical and chemical parameters, in special with dissolved oxygen concentration and nutrients.

Abstract: The paper resume the most important activities undertaken by the Romanian authorities responsible for the water management activity in order to control the accidental pollution effects on the Danube River hydrographical Basin, since 1997, the data of initiation of a Danubian Accident Emergency Warning System (AEWS), which by own Pollution Alert Center (located at the Ministry of Eniroment and Water Management (MMGA), assures the safety of the population and contribute for the preservation of  the natural environment and water resources. The efficiency of the Romanian PIAC was firstly proved during the Kosovo war, in spring of 1999, when communicated the state of the Danube at the entrance in Romania,  due to contradictory news about the NATO bombardments on economical objectives and refineries on the Danube banks (Novi Sad, Pancevo etc.) which posed a serious threat on the water intakes for the population along the Danube River and Danube Delta. On 30 January 2000 at around 10 p.m. a dam broke at the Aurul Mine Tailings Recovery Plant near Baia Mare in north-western Romania, (due to liquid precipitation fallen on a thick snow layer and sudden increase of the temperature (from below zero to 8°C). Approximately 100,000m³ of a high cyanide and heavy metal containing wastewater were discharged into the receiving creeks, and from there onwards into the river network of the Danube Basin (Somes/Szamos; Tisza and the Danube).  In the same region, another tailing dam broke in Baia Borsa on 10 March 2000, due to a severe rainfall, spilling 40,000 tones of heavy metals containing sediments. These two serious accidents with a transboundary impact initiated a rapid response within both the ICPDR and the EU. The Romanian PIAC announced in due time the population and the transboundary countries in order to take the necessary measures for preventing any contamination, being noticed that no any affected persons were recorded. Also the data transmitted in due time by Romanian PIAC, was forwarded by the ICPDR Secretariat from Vienna directly to Mrs. Margot Wallstrom, the European Commissioner on Environment Protection, which allowed  the spreading to media, just of the accurate information about the pollution evolution and about the measures taken in due time by the Romanian authorities in order to diminish and to avoid any adverse effects of the accidents against the water users and the environment.  That’s why the AEWS (Accident Emergency Warning System), through his own PIAC’s will further constitute a meeting point of all measures and initiatives in the Danube Hydrographical Basin. For Romania, one of the most important is the implementation of the Water Framework Directive, regarding the improvement of the water quality state, a condition for assuring a better standard of water services for population and environmental preservation, for a safe living into a Common European space.  Furthermore, the new alert thresholds for water pollution in the framework of the Danubian AEWS recently issued (2005), will lead to an improvement of the aproaches related to the safety issues for each plant owner of dangerous substances for water, in order to improve the water protection and the public opion over the measures taken by the responsible authorities involved in the water management problems.

Abstract: Salt exploitation has been performed in Ocnele Mari since 1961, through dissolution, by means of probes in order to respond the needs of chemical industry in Râmnicu Vâlcea. As a result of some uncontrolled dissolutions there appeared an underground cavity represented at the surface by a section larger than 10 he. The total volume of the cavity at the six leads (joined by the uncontrolled dissolution) was estimated to be 3 650 000 m3 of brine. In the evening of September 12, 2001, a catastrophic collapse took place in the area of the II probes field (Ţeica). The 300 m diameter crater induced the collapse of the 377 probe, collapse of houses etc., which lead to the immediate evacuation of 90 households (with 209 persons). The protection measures have required the performing of a retention wall, brine evacuation of the collapse cone, execution of lopsided drillings for the direct gravitational collapse of the cave, floor etc.
